This antique Serapi rug features a grand, open geometric design with a large central medallion in navy and ivory that stands out boldly against the red field. The medallion is surrounded by angular corner spandrels filled with large-scale stylized flowers, leaves, and abstract shapes that create a sense of movement and balance. The wide main border shows repeating geometric floral chains in contrasting colors, with multiple guard borders adding layers of detail around the edges.
Serapi rugs, part of the broader Heriz group, were woven in villages near the town of Serab in northwest Persia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known for their bold, large-scale patterns and exceptional durability, they used thick local wool and natural dyes to create pieces that could withstand harsh village conditions. Antique examples like this one often display softer, more varied colors from age and careful fading.
The heavy wool pile and very tight weave make this rug extremely tough, perfect for large living rooms, formal dining areas, or entry halls with substantial foot traffic. Its warm red tones and strong geometric motifs pair well with traditional wood furniture, antique pieces, or even modern spaces needing a classic anchor. The impressive size provides full coverage for big seating arrangements, and with gentle care, it will remain a strong, beautiful centerpiece for decades.
