This large antique Persian Mahal rug from around 1910 features a beautiful all-over semi-floral pattern with repeating medallions, lush palmettes, and scrolling vines densely covering the warm red field. The design flows symmetrically without a heavy central focus, creating a rich, harmonious composition. Wide multiple borders include repeating floral garlands, intricate geometric chains, and narrow guard bands in contrasting navy and ivory, framing the rug with classic depth and elegance.
Mahal rugs from the late 19th to early 20th century are known for their spacious all-over floral patterns and softer, more relaxed drawing compared to tightly knotted Sarouks, often using natural dyes for vibrant yet harmonious colors. Woven with thick wool pile, these pieces offer a plush texture and excellent durability. This example’s generous size, fine detail, and great condition make it a standout antique piece from the Hamadan region.
Perfect for very large living rooms, formal dining halls, or expansive great rooms where it can fully cover the floor and serve as the room’s foundation. The rich red field with navy and green accents provides luxurious warmth and sophistication, pairing beautifully with classic furniture and traditional decor. Its sturdy wool construction ensures lasting comfort and beauty under heavy use.
