This large Afghan Oushak rug features an open and airy composition with a gentle all-over pattern. Large-scale floral sprays, curving vines, and delicate branching motifs in soft sage and coral tones spread across the ivory field, creating a light and elegant design. The wide borders include repeating stylized flowers and vine elements that frame the piece with quiet refinement.
Oushak rugs originated in Turkey, while Sultanabad designs came from central Persia. Afghan weavers today blend these traditions, producing pieces with the spacious feel of Oushak rugs and the flowing floral patterns associated with Sultanabad Zigler designs. This example uses fine wool and careful hand-knotting to achieve a medium pile with a slightly distressed, vintage appearance.
The wool material provides good durability for large living rooms, dining areas, or great rooms with moderate traffic. Its pale ivory base and soft accents work well with light wood floors, neutral furniture, or coastal and transitional interiors. The generous size offers excellent coverage under seating groups or tables, and the open pattern allows furniture to sit comfortably without hiding the motifs.
