This new handmade Indian rug follows the classic Karajah design with a rich navy field featuring a large central octagonal medallion in terracotta tones, filled with angular star patterns, small floral sprays, and hooked motifs in contrasting ivory and blue. The medallion is flanked by matching corner spandrels and smaller geometric fillers that create a strong, symmetrical layout with plenty of bold detail. Wide multicolored borders include repeating palmettes, vine scrolls, and zigzag guards in rust, turquoise, and beige, adding depth and traditional framing to the composition.
Karajah (or Karajeh) rugs originate from northwest Persia near Heriz, known for their sturdy geometric patterns and vibrant yet balanced color use influenced by Caucasian weaving traditions. Indian reproductions like this one capture the essence of antique Karajah pieces through high knot counts and careful dyeing to mimic natural wool tones, resulting in a fresh but authentically detailed appearance. The hand-knotting technique provides a thick, even pile that’s built for durability and comfort in everyday settings.
This standard large size suits living rooms with sectional seating, dining rooms with 8-10 person tables, or spacious bedrooms where it can extend under furniture for a grounded look. Wool construction ensures strong resistance to wear, natural stain resistance, and pleasant texture underfoot, with care involving regular vacuuming and prompt treatment of spills. Traditional Karajah designs in new production offer excellent value, delivering the bold character of Persian classics at a more accessible price point for modern homes.
